Australian-Georgian relations were established in 1992. Australia first recognized Georgia as an independent state on March 29, 1992. In recent years, bilateral relations have mainly focused on education and commercial partnership.

Australia does not have its own embassy in Georgia, but its ambassador in the Turkish capital Ankara is accredited for this purpose . Georgia opened an embassy in Canberra in March 2012 .

Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Nalbandov toured Australia in November 2010 and Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze in October 2011. Australian Special Envoy Russell Trood, responsible for diplomatic relations for the Balkans , Caucasus and Eastern Europe, visited Georgia in June 2012.

Population numbers

According to the 2011 census, there were 489 people in Australia who said they were of Georgian origin. The number of Australians living in Georgia is insignificant in terms of numbers.

trade

The two countries intend to further develop their trade relations. 2014, the total trade between the two countries amounted to nearly 13.4 million AUD . Georgia imported goods worth AU $ 7.5 million from Australia, mainly wool , special machinery (parts) and dairy products . Goods worth AUD 5.8 million, mainly tractors , clothing and fruit juices were exported to Australia .

Supports

Australia donated AUD 1 million in humanitarian aid to help alleviate the aftermath of the conflict between Georgia and Russia in August 2008 .

In September 2010, Australia participated in an international partnership for the disposal of duds in the Caucasus region.
