The market fountain in Rottweil

The market fountain in Rottweil is an example of the stonemasonry art of the early Renaissance and an extraordinary political monument. Its four-story pyramid of fountains is crowned by the figure of the Swiss foot soldier. At the Rottweiler Marktbrunnen in 1519 the male citizens swore the eternal union of their city with the Swiss confederates . He stands at the intersection of Hauptstrasse and Hochbrückorstrasse.

architecture

The octagonal fountain trough is enclosed by a forged iron grating. In the middle there is a column made of red sandstone. It is extended horizontally on four floors with a rich architectural work of round and flat arches, pillars, columns and pilasters. The four levels are adorned with 16 stone sculptures about 45 cm high, which are based on models by the Augsburg painter Hans Burgkmair the Elder. Ä. should have arisen.

In addition to the allegorical representation of the three Christian virtues faith, hope and love and the four vices avarice, arrogance, indolence and anger, ancient and Old Testament heroes and Roman deities can be seen. Judith , David and Caesar as well as Jupiter , Mars , Mercury , Saturn and Sol are shown in detail . Well pyramids and figures were originally colored and gilded.

The master of the fountain is only documented with his stonemason's mark.

history

The fountain, created around 1540, was renewed for the first time in 1606. During a second repair in 1851, the figures were painted dark brown in oil. Further restoration attempts destroyed the column. Today's fountain is a copy by the Tübingen sculptor Heinrich Krauss. The original figure decorations were replaced by copies by the Rottweiler sculptor Germana Klaiber-Kasper. Original figures are exhibited in the Lorenz chapel.
