The East Market or Mercado del Este is an old market hall in the Spanish city of Santander , the capital of Cantabria . The market hall has been a listed building since 1986 .

history

The plans for the market hall were designed by the architect José María López-Dóriga . Construction began in 1839 and was completed in 1842. It comprises two streets of the newly created city extension, called Ensanche in Spanish . This new market had become necessary due to the increasing population and relieved the already existing market Mercado de la Esperanza , which is located near the city administration.

The single-storey market hall has a floor area of 40 meters wide and 60 meters long. In 2000 it was renovated and since then it no longer serves the grocery trade, but houses a restaurant, bars, a tourist information office for the Cantabria region and an exhibition hall as well as other shops.
