Marlotte is an open-front dress with a stand-up collar , which is usually shorter than a skirt .

The marlotte is a kind of scarf that women wore for the first time in the time of Francis I , but were generally worn in the second half of the 16th century and gradually shortened to mere coats.

The marlotte and the berne (a marlotte without sleeves ) were first mentioned in Rabelais ' Gargantua .
