The Martin family are among the oldest in Galway . She came to Ireland with Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke , called Strongbow, and became an important family of traders in Galway. She later also settled in Ballinahinch, Dangan, Ross, Spiddal and Tulira in County Galway.

Oliver Martin was the first bearer of the name to come to Ireland. He was a follower of Strongbow and the name Martin is derived from martialisch = warlike. Some researchers believe that the Martins were of Old Irish descent. Richard Martin of Dangan or Ballinahinch Castle is descended from the oldest branch of the family and the houses of Curraghmore, Ross, Spiddal and Tullyra are among the most prestigious in the province.

Famous members of the Martin family were Richard Martin (1754–1834) also known as "Humanity Dick Martin", the founder of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Edward Martyn (1859–1923) (from Tullira), Irish playwright and politician of the Sinn Féin : He was a neighbor of Lady Isabella Augusta Gregory and introduced her to William Butler Yeats at his house ; who, like himself, were co-founders of the Abbey Theater , the Irish national theater in Dublin .
