Maruyama Park (Kyoto)
The Maruyama Park ( Japanese 円 山 公園 , Maruyama-kōen ) is the oldest public park in Kyoto .
Overview
The park, located in the Higashiyama district , opened in 1886. The name comes from the temple Enzan'anyō-ji (円 山 安 養 寺), which is located in the east of the site and whose sub-temples were located directly on the site. The park was laid out by the well-known gardening expert of the time, Ogawa Jibee (小川 治 兵衛; 1860–1933).
Part of the park is occupied by the "bottle gourd pond" (瓢 箪 池, Hyōtan-ike; in plan 1), jokingly named after its shape. This pond was created in 1913 in the form of a Japanese convertible garden. In this area is also the memorial (2 in the plan) for Sakamoto Ryōma and Nakaoka Shintarō , who were attacked and killed as opponents of the Tokugawa shogunate in Kyoto in 1867. There is also a marker (3) in the park that points to the historian and poet Rai San'yō (1780–1832).
The park is the only one in Kyoto that has been recognized as a “place worth seeing” (名 所, Meisho) for its cherry trees. Famous among the cherry trees is a tree with the full name about "Unique White-Higan Weeping Cherry Tree" (一 重 白 彼岸 枝 垂 れ 桜, Hitoe Shiro-Higan Shidare zakura). After the original tree, which was estimated to be 200 years old, died in 1947, the 15th generation gardener, Sano Tōemon (佐野 藤 右衛門), pulled a sprout from a seed that he gave to the park in 1949. The tree is now (2014) 12 m high, its trunk has a trunk of 2.8 m.
In the southwest of the park is the villa "Chōrakukan" (長 楽 館), which the Japanese tobacco king Murai Kichibee (村井 吉 兵衛; 1864-1926) had built. The property is now used as a hotel.
At the end of April you can stroll through the park under illuminated cherry blossoms in the evening.
