Master of Commerce (M.Com. Or Magister Commercii) is a specialized master’s program with a focus on commercial, management and economic topics, which, like the Bachelor of Commerce , is common in Commonwealth nations .

Structure compared to other degrees

The Master of Commerce is usually a one and a half to two year full-time course. The curriculum of the M. Com. is in a field such as B. Accounting, economics, statistics, finance or marketing and the underlying theory. Given this structure, the Master of Commerce differs from other master’s programs, such as B. the Master of Business Administration (MBA), which usually does not contain any specialization. However, some universities also offer the Master of Commerce in General Management, which in terms of content hardly differs from an MBA.

Admission to the M. Com. is linked to an economics-oriented bachelor's degree (e.g. a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Business Administration / Economics or Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Business Administration / Economics) or a similar academic degree . In general, direct admission to the M. Com. an "Honors degree" is required from a previously completed BCom course. However, some M. Com. Programs now also accept students from non-economics-oriented courses such as engineering or natural sciences. However, these programs require participation in additional lectures to make up for a lack of specialist knowledge.

Compared to other specialized Master’s programs, such as the Master of Finance or the Master of Accounting, the Master of Commerce places a stronger focus on theoretical models. Thus, in terms of academic standards and applied theoretical depth, the Master of Commerce can best be compared with the Master of Science in Business Administration at a German university, which is customary in Germany.
