Matthew J. Evans (physicist)

Matthew J. Evans is an American physicist who studies gravitational wave detectors . He is part of the LIGO collaboration.

Evans studied physics at Harvey Mudd College and graduated in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in 1996. He received his doctorate in 2002 at Caltech , where he then worked as a post-doctoral student at the gravitational wave observatory LIGO and also at the European Virgo . From 2007 Evans was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he participated in the Advanced LIGO project of an advanced gravitational wave interferometer. He has been an Associate Professor at MIT since 2018, working on developing new technologies for future gravitational wave detectors that go beyond Advanced LIGO (like squeezed light). Since 2014 he has headed the Advanced Interferometer Configurations Working Group at MIT.

He also explores the principal quantum mechanical and thermodynamic limits of interferometer accuracy in gravitational wave detectors of the Ligo type.

In 2019 he received the New Horizons in Physics Prize for research on current and future earth-based gravitational wave detectors (laudatory speech).
