MedAT

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Medical Admission Test in Austria ( MedAT for short ) was introduced in 2013 as an admission procedure for the courses in Human Medicine , Dentistry and Molecular Medicine (Innsbruck) and combines the two previous admission procedures at the Medical Universities of Innsbruck , Vienna and Graz by providing both prior scientific knowledge and and cognitive skills are tested. From 2006 to 2012 the EMS ( aptitude test for medical courses ) was used at the Medical University of Innsbruck and Vienna . A separate test was used in Graz, which consisted of three sub-tests: basic medical knowledge at secondary school level, text comprehension and a situational judgment test , which was also intended to check psychosocial competence.

Since 2014, medical study places have also been offered at the newly founded Medical Faculty of the University of Linz and awarded according to test results in the MedAT. The joint admission procedure takes place across Austria at the same time, so you can only apply to one of the four universities. The test can be repeated as often as required.

Structure of the MedAT-H (human medicine)

The MedAT-H is made up of four test parts:

  • Basic knowledge test for medical studies as a mathematical-scientific knowledge test 40%: biology (40 questions), chemistry (24 questions), physics (18 questions), mathematics (12 questions)
  • Text comprehension 10%: 12 tasks (text comprehension)
  • Test of cognitive abilities and skills 40% (similar to an intelligence test : putting figures together (15 tasks), allergy cards (25 tasks), number sequences (10 tasks), recognizing implications (10 tasks), verbal fluency (15 tasks))
  • Social-emotional competencies 10% (a situational judgment test ): social decision-making (10 tasks), recognizing emotions (10 tasks)

Structure of the MedAT-Z (dentistry)

Also consists of four test parts:

  • Basic knowledge test for medical studies as a mathematical and scientific knowledge test 30%: biology (40 questions), chemistry (24 questions), physics (18 questions), mathematics (12 questions)
  • Test of cognitive abilities and skills 30%: assembling figures (15 tasks), allergy certificates (25 tasks), number sequences (10 tasks), verbal fluency (15 tasks)
  • Social decision-making 10%: Social decision-making (10 tasks), recognizing emotions (10 tasks)
  • In addition, a test of manual skills is carried out 30%: wire bending test (3 tasks), drawing task "mirroring shapes" (7 tasks)
  • The "Implications" subtest is not included.

MedAT registration

Registration for the MedAT takes place exclusively online via the official page of the entrance test. Every year the registration period starts on the first day of March and lasts until the end of March. After the registration deadline, you can no longer change your location and you can only apply to one place.

Allocation of university places (allocation of contingents)

At all four universities (Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz), the study places for human medicine and dentistry are allocated in the following step-by-step procedure (also known under the term quota distribution): In the first step, 75% of all study places go to Austrians with the best test results (total values ). In the second step, the ineligible Austrians compete with all applicants from the EU for the next 20% of the study places. In the last step, those applicants who did not get a study place in the previous 20%, i.e. both EU foreigners and Austrians, compete with non-EU foreigners for the last 5% of the study places.

Test preparation

The Medical University of Graz provides the medical universities of Vienna , Graz, Innsbruck and the Medical Faculty of the JKU Linz with documents for test preparation online in the VMC (Virtual Medical Campus).

Number of places and applicants

In 2018 there are 1536 places for human medicine and 144 places for dentistry in Austria, for which 15,880 applicants have registered.

The distribution of study places at the various locations is as follows (human / tooth):

  • Medical University of Vienna with 660/80
  • Medical University of Innsbruck with 360/40
  • Medical University of Graz with 336/24
  • JKU Linz with 180 / -

It should be noted that the ratio of applicants to those admitted is not 1:10 or 10%, as the information above suggests, but must be viewed separately for each university. For example, in 2017 in Vienna, 12.4% of the Austrian test participants received a place at university, whereas only 7.1% of the applicants from the EU foreigner quota were admitted to the course.
