Megaliths of Killadangan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bronze Age megaliths of Killadangan ( Irish Coill an Daingin - German  "Forest of the fortress" , also called Gortbraud) consist of four menhirs ( English Standing Stones ), an oval enclosure, a presumed burnt mound , a row of stones and a pair of stones. You are in the salt marsh ( English Salt marsh ) of Gortbraud, northeast of Croagh Patrick , right on the R335, about 2.5 km east of the Murrisk Abbey , 5.0 kilometers west of Westport in County Mayo in Ireland .

The row of stones

The northeast-southwest oriented row of stones in the western quadrant of the earthen enclosure consists of four standing stones and one lying. The stones rise in height from the 0.45 meter high stone at the northern end to the 1.2 meter high stone in the south.

The stone pair

About 50 meters southwest of the row of stones is a pair of stones. The northern stone is 1.3 meters high by 0.8 meters wide, and the longitudinal axis is in line with the row. The southern stone is a rounded boulder that is only 0.4 meters high and almost one meter wide.

West of the pair of stones and southwest of the row is a roughly circular arrangement of small stones. These can be part of a disturbed stone circle. The massive grouping suggests that there was a large ceremonial center here. Although the stones are in a salt marsh that was affected by floods in earlier millennia, this did not endanger the monuments.

The menhirs

The menhirs seem to be spread by chance. The southern megalith is 1.4 meters high and 1.1 meters wide. To the west of the stone is a hill. The western stone is 1.55 meters high and 0.8 meters wide. The northern stone is 1.35 meters high and 1.05 meters wide.
