Multiple murder by Geylang Bahru

The multiple homicides of Geylang Bahru refers to the murders committed on the morning of January 6, 1979 of the four children of the Tan family in Geylang Bahru, Singapore . The murders have not yet been solved.

Sequence of events

Tan Kuen Chai and Lee Mei Ying, the parents of the murdered children, left their home at 6:35 a.m. to go to work as school bus drivers. At 7:10 am, Lee Mei Ying tried to wake up her four children Tan Kok Peng, Tan Kok Hin, Tan Kok Soon and Tan Chin Nee with a phone call. After the calls failed three times, Lee Mei Ying contacted a neighbor who was supposed to wake the children by knocking on the apartment door. This attempt also failed.

When Kuen Chai and Mei Ying returned from work around 10 a.m., they found the bodies of their four children in the bathroom at home. Each of the children sustained about twenty cuts. The eldest child's right arm, Kok Peng, was almost severed and the youngest daughter, Chin Nee's face, was severely cut. A tuft of hair found in Kok Peng's hand also indicated a fight with the attackers.

The police investigations showed that the perpetrator (s) did not use force to gain entry to the apartment. Although the motive could not be determined, a predatory intention was ruled out, as no material objects were stolen.

The murder weapons could not be recovered. According to the injuries, however, it was probably a cleaver or a similar weapon.

The police assumed that the perpetrator (s) were closely related to the Tan family or at least had personal information. A special reason for this conclusion was provided by a card Lee Mei Ying and Tan Kuen Chai received on the occasion of the New Year celebrations.

The card, which arrived two weeks after the crime, showed children playing and contained the sentence in Chinese, “ Now you will no longer be able to have offspring ” . The card was signed “the murderer”. The contents of the card referred to the sterilization that Lee Mei Ying had carried out before the murders.

Lee Mei Ying and Tan Kuen Chai gave up their school bus service.

Five years after the murders, Lee Mei Ying gave birth to another child after reversing her sterilization in 1981 .
