The multi-layer board ( english multilayer board ) is a printed circuit board , which consists of more than two conductive tracks (Engl. Carrying planes layer ) is. Due to the complexity of today's circuits, this is often the only way to create a layout . The individual levels are connected to one another by means of vias .

The supply voltage is often on one level, only signal lines on one or more other layers, and the reference potential on another layer . In order to achieve better results with regard to electromagnetic compatibility , reference potentials and supply voltages can also be located in the inner layers. The number of layers is always even due to the production process used.

The usual number of multi-layers is between 4 and 24; the higher the number of layers, the higher the manufacturing price of the board.
