VAT information exchange system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Commission's VAT Information Exchange System ( VIES ) is used to electronically transfer information about companies registered in the EU with regard to VAT registration . It was introduced with the abolition of tax controls at the EU internal borders on January 1, 1993.

The VIES can be used, among other things, to check the validity of individual sales tax identification numbers , either via web interface or web service .

In addition, the system is used by the tax administrations of the individual EU member states to exchange information about tax-exempt intra-community deliveries .
