Master of the Golden Bull

As a champion of the Golden Bull one is medieval illuminators referred. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after the 48 magnificent miniatures with which he painted the Bohemian edition of the Golden Bull around 1400 .

The master worked in the court workshop of the Bohemian King Wenceslaus IV in Prague. The golden bull painted by the master is a copy of the legal text of the Holy Roman Empire, which was commissioned by Wenceslas and regulated the modalities of the election and the coronation of the Roman-German kings. The pictures have this choice and related themes to the motif and are considered an example of Bohemian book illumination of the highest quality. Their background is often lavishly created with gold leaf and surrounded by tendrils. The work can be found today in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. At the same time, the Wenceslas Bible , another magnificent manuscript and, like the Golden Bull, a leading work of Bohemian illumination around 1400, was also created in Wenceslas ' workshop .
