Master of the Talheim Altarpiece: Talheim Altarpiece, open; around 1518

The artist, unknown by name, is known as the master of the Talheim Altarpiece (or also the Master of the Talheim Altarpiece ), who around 1518 painted pictures on grand piano and predella for an altar in Talheim , a district of Mössingen . It was the wedding present from the parents of Anna von Stetten , who was married to the local Eberhard von Karpfen. The altar has been in the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart since 1884 (inv. No. 1956-22). The elegant aura and perfect craftsmanship of this painting make the Talheim reredos a major work of late Gothic art in southwest Germany.

Motifs of the Talheim Altarpiece

The middle part of the Talheimer Altar was probably a shrine sculpture carved by an anonymous master from Ulm, probably a relief of Mary . The images created by the master of the Talheim Altarpiece show the Annunciation to Mary and the Visitation on the outer wings, the birth of Jesus and the adoration of the kings on the inner wings . The predella shows Christ with the twelve apostles.

Aspects of an interpretation

The Annunciation scene of the Talheimer Altar z. B. is characterized by a "particularly clear description of the events". The images of the altar were represented in the imagination of the late Middle Ages. identification

The pictures on the Talheim Altarpiece were formerly ascribed to the master von Meßkirch , until an independent painting style was recognized. Several Ulm artists may have been involved in the altar, perhaps under the workshop management of the carver Niklaus Weckmann .
