Master of San Martino a Mensola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Master of San Martino a Mensola ( it. Maestro di San Martino a Mensola) or sometimes masters of the high altar of S. Martino a Mensola one is Italian painter called, in the 15th century in the area around Florence worked. The artist, whose name is not certain, got his emergency name after his high altar painting in the church of San Martino above Ponte a Mensola, a place near Settignano , northeast of Florence. The work from around 1391 shows a Madonna and Child .

A few other panel paintings can possibly be assigned to the master of San Martino a Mensola , but his catalog of works cannot necessarily be precisely determined. As was common in the Middle Ages, he did not sign his pictures, but some works can be grouped together and assigned to the master or his circle by comparing styles, for example of fabric samples of the figures' clothing. Some of the master's works are privately owned, such as three paintings of the Madonna with saints.

There may be a relationship between the master of San Martino a Mensola and the Florentine painter Giovanni Bonsi , who was active around 1350. It can be assumed that the master learned his craft in his workshop. However, it should also show Spanish influences.

It is proposed to identify the master of San Martino a Mensola with the painter Francesco di Michele . In the possession of the Galleria dell Academia in Florence there is a picture of a saint, which is attributed to Michele and whose picture descriptions equate him with the master of San Martino a Mensola .
