Master of Becoming: The Conversion of St. Hubertus, around 1485–1490

The late Gothic painter of an altar for the Werden monastery is known as the master of Werden .

The master of Werden , who was active around 1485–1490, is considered to be a student of the Cologne master of the life of Mary based on the dating of his pictures and is attributed to his workshop. The Master of Werden is generally recognized as an independent artist, but stylistically he is very close to the Master of the Life of Mary as well as the Master of the Lyversberg Passion , who are also assigned to the Cologne School of Painting .

Two wings of the Werden altarpiece have been preserved in the National Gallery in London. They were previously listed under Masters of Becoming . but are now listed under the attribution "Workshop of the Master of the Life of Mary". They show a total of eight saints and two scenes from the life of St. Hubertus:

  • Hll. Hieronymus, Benedikt, Aegidius and Romuald, approx. 1485–1490
  • Hll. Augustinus, Ludger, Hubertus and Gereon, approx. 1485–1490
  • The conversion of St. Hubertus, approx. 1485–1490
  • The Mass of St. Hubertus, approx. 1485–1490,

The tablet with the conversion of St. Hubertus shows the tradition that St. Hubertus was converted on Good Friday when he met a deer with a crucifix in his antlers. The picture of the master of Werden is the best known of a series of works by other painters on this 14th century saint story about the patron of the hunt. The hunter's outfit as well as the precise depiction of contemporary courtly clothing in the master's picture are often taken into account in art history.
