Roger Engelmann

Roger Engelmann (born September 12, 1956 in Munich ) is a German historian . His research focuses on the history of the GDR and the Ministry of State Security .

Life

Roger Engelmann was born in Munich in 1956. After graduating from the German School in Rome , he studied history, German and social sciences at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and graduated with the first state examination for high school teaching. Between 1985 and 1989 he was a scholarship holder and contract holder at the German Historical Institute in Rome . In 1990 he received his doctorate from LMU Munich with a thesis on provincial fascism in Italy in the early 1920s using the example of the Carrara region. From 1990 to 1992 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich. Since 1992 he has been working as a research assistant and project manager for the Federal Commissioner for Stasi Records in Berlin.

Scientific work

Roger Engelmann's main research interests include the history of the GDR State Security Service, especially in the 1950s, political criminal justice in the GDR, source studies on the Ministry of State Security, and rule and everyday life in state socialism. He has published numerous monographs, edited volumes and essays on these topics, several of them in collaboration with the journalist and GDR expert Karl Wilhelm Fricke . Together with Daniela Münkel , he is currently researching the relationship between rule and society in the GDR province using the example of the Halberstadt district . In addition, he is involved in the research and edition project “The GDR as seen by the Stasi”, which is headed by Daniela Münkel.
