Melote

The melote ( Greek μηλωτή , sheepskin ') is a kind of coat made of fur that was worn around the shoulders.

The item of clothing originally worn by shepherds developed into a characteristic item of clothing for prophets and philosophers in antiquity . In Christianity it was considered the typical piece of clothing of the early hermits and monks, which they also used as a night camp and to carry their few belongings. The garment is still in use today in some Christian religious orders .
