List of apple varieties |
Melrose is a cultivar of the cultivated apple .
The variety 'Melrose' was created in 1932 at the Agricultural Experiment Station in Wooster (Ohio) as a cross between the varieties ' Jonathan ' and ' Red Delicious ' and has been on the market since 1942.
The fruits of this variety become medium-sized. The skin is smooth, hard and brown-red on the sunny side. The flesh is very firm and juicy and has a sweet and aromatic taste. The apple is ripe for picking in mid-October , it can be stored until March, stored cool until May. The apple is suitable for fresh consumption, and is occasionally used to make juice.
Because of the low frost hardness , Melrose is only suitable for mild, sheltered locations. The strain does best in nutrient-rich soils.
