Meratus is a sacred mountain and a mountain range in the southeast of the island of Borneo ( Indonesia ).

The Meratus Mountains run in a north-south arc and divide the province of South Kalimantan into two parts. The eastern part of the province is mountainous and covered with tropical rainforest . The indigenous Dayak are the minority here. The region to the south is much flatter, with wide and long rivers that meander through the lowlands and wetlands. At its southern foothills is the Kusan mountain range. The Meratus mountain range rises to the east and then connects with the lowlands on the coast. To the west it runs out in a swampy basin, which was formed by the Negara river. The east is also characterized by a large number of bays.

In the 1990s, the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation released 350 orangutans into the Meratus sanctuary.

The highest point of the Meratus Mountains is the Gunung Besar mountain with a height of 1892  m ( 2 ° 42 ′ 39 ″  S , 115 ° 37 ′ 33 ″  E ).
