European Championship 2008 in Willingen

The 2008 European pool championship was a pool tournament that took place from August 7th to 16th, 2008 in the Sauerland Stern Hotel in Willingen, Germany. The European pool association EPBF is responsible for the organization . A total of over 700 athletes from 40 nations took part in the fourth European Championship in Germany after 1980 , 1987 and 2006 .

The EM 2008 was particular in that (as usual) as not only the categories of men , women and wheelchairs fought out their EM together in one place, but in parallel also the juniors , juniors , students , seniors and seniors played in Willingen. The disciplines 8-ball , 9-ball and 14/1 were played out endlessly . There was also a team competition for the juniors , schoolchildren and seniors . However, not all categories played out all disciplines; for example, wheelchair users traditionally only played the 8-ball and 9-ball titles; but not endlessly in 14/1.

For the sake of clarity, this article only deals with the classic categories of men , women and wheelchair users . For the competitions of the juniors , juniors and students , see Pool Billiard European Youth Championship 2008 .

Schedule & Format

First of all, the titles in 14/1 , which were scheduled for the period from August 7th to 9th, were played endlessly . This was followed by the competitions in the 8-ball discipline, which were played between August 8th and 11th. The conclusion was then 9-Ball, which was on the program between August 12th and 16th.

Initially, all categories were played in the double knockout system . This means that you can lose a game (but then you have to survive the longer way through the losers round) without being eliminated from the tournament immediately. A second defeat led to the end of the tournament in any case. This game mode was used until there was only a certain number of players in the tournament (32 for men, 16 for women and 8 for wheelchair users). From then on it went in the knockout system (meaning: every defeat leads to immediate elimination) until the final. A game for 3rd place was not played.
