The 1997 European Pool Championship was a pool tournament that took place from April 5 to 13, 1997 at the Radisson Hotel in Stavanger and was organized by the European Pool Association EPBF . The EM took place for the first time in Stavanger and after 1986 and 1993 for the third time in Norway .
The disciplines 8-ball , 9-ball and 14/1 were played out endlessly . In addition, the European champions of the teams were determined for the men and women.
As in 1993 and 1996 , all finalists in the men's singles came from Germany. In the 14/1 Endless Ralf Souquet won the final against Oliver Ortmann , as in the previous year . In the 8-ball final he lost to Bernd Jahnke . Both met in the 9-ball final, with Souquet becoming European champion. Thomas Engert won the bronze medal in the 14/1 endlessly and in the 9-ball. Jahnke won bronze endlessly in the 14/1. Oliver Ortmann, who in 1996 became European 8-ball and 9-ball champion and vice-European 14/1 champion, won bronze in 8-ball. The Finns Mika Lehtimäki and Mika Immonen were the only players not from Germany to win medals in the men's singles.
The Austrian Gerda Hofstätter won the final in 14/1 endlessly against the German Franziska Stark . In addition, she became 8-ball European champion by beating the Italian Anita Rizutti in the final . In the 9-ball the German Sylvia Buschhüter was European champion in the final against the Norwegian Line Kjørsvik . The Germans Michaela Rank and Franziska Stark as well as the Swiss Julia Rechfeld and Sabina Dederding also each won a bronze medal. In addition to her two European Championship titles, Gerda Hofstätter also won bronze in the 9-ball.
The German men's team consisting of Thomas Engert, Oliver Ortmann, Ralf Souquet and Bernd Jahnke became European champions for the seventh time in a row in the final against Denmark. Luxembourg and Austria won the bronze medal. In the women’s category, Germany (Franziska Stark, Michaela Rank, Sylvia Buschhüter and Birgit Reimann ) did not succeed in becoming European champions after three consecutive titles. In the final, the team lost to the Swiss team against which they had won the final last year.
