Darren Lee Appleton (born February 8, 1978 in Pontefract ) is an English pool player . He became world champion in the 10-ball discipline in 2008 and world champion in 9-ball in 2012 . He also won the US Open twice and the gold medal at the World Games in 2013 .

Career

Appleton began at the age of 12 years with billiards . In July 2000, he moved into the final round of the 9-ball world championship of the WPA for the first time , but in the round of the last 64 he was defeated by the Taiwanese Chang Hao-ping 4-9 . In 2001 he reached the quarter-finals at the 8-ball world championship of the WEPF , which he lost 8: 9 against eventual world champion Chris Melling . In July 2002 he was eliminated from the preliminary round of the 9-Ball World Cup . After he had reached the quarter-finals again at the WEPF 8-Ball World Cup in 2002, he moved into the final in 2004, in which he was defeated by his compatriot Mick Hill 9:11. In 2005 he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Phil Harrison .

In January 2006, Appleton won its first Euro Tour medal; at the Czech Open he made it to the final, losing to the Dutchman Nick van den Berg with 1: 9. At the Germany Open 2006 he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Harald Stolka , the eventual winner of the tournament. In June 2006 he made it to the final of the WEPF 8-Ball World Cup for the second time, which he lost to Mark Selby 7:11 . On the International Pool Tour in 2006 he finished seventh at the North American Open and 22nd place at the World Open. At the US Open in 2006, he was fifth. In November 2006 he took part in the WPA 9-Ball World Cup for the first time since 2002, but was eliminated in the preliminary round.

In January 2007, Appleton finished 17th in the 9-ball competition at the Derby City Classic . At the WPA 8-Ball World Cup in 2007 he reached the round of 32. A month later he made it to the semi-finals of the Italy Open 2007 , in which he lost 7:10 to Konstantin Stepanow . In addition, he was thirteenth at the BCA Open in 2007 and ninth at the Predator International Championship , before moving into the final of the World 9-Ball Challenge in November 2007, where he lost to Ronato Alcano .

At the Derby City Classic 2008, Appleton won the 14/1 Endless Challenge. In the one-pocket competition, he came seventh. In April 2008 he won the Italy Open for the first time a Euro Tour tournament, after defeating the Italian Bruno Muratore 9-2 in the final . A few days later he was eliminated from the preliminary round of the 8-Ball World Cup . After finishing ninth at the Predator International Championship and the Qatar World Open 2008, he reached the quarter-finals in 9-ball in his first European Championship participation in August 2008 , which he lost 7: 9 to Muratore. In January 2009, Appleton finished fifth in 9-ball at the Derby City Classic. At the 2009 US Bar Table Championship, he won the 10-ball competition and lost the 9-ball final to Glenn Atwell . In May 2009 he won the World Pool Masters by beating Nick van den Berg 8: 4 in the final , to which he was invited for the first time this year. At the Qatar World Open 2009, he finished third. In August 2009 he moved into the finals of the Austrian Open and lost 6: 9 to the Swede Marcus Chamat . A month later, he won his fifth Euro Tour medal at the Netherlands Open , after being eliminated in the semifinals by Imran Majid . At the 10-Ball World Cup in 2009 , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against David Alcaide .

In February 2010, Appleton lost the 10-ball final of the US Bar Table Championship to Earl Strickland . In April 2010 he reached the semi-finals of the 8-ball world championship , which he lost to Niels Feijen. After he was eliminated in the round of 32 at the 2010 World Pool Masters , he did not get beyond the preliminary round at the 9-Ball World Cup . In August 2010, he finished third in the World Series of Pool . In October 2010 he won the US Open in the final against Corey Deuel . In December 2010 he won a Euro Tour tournament for the second time with an 8: 6 victory in the final against the Spaniard Francisco Díaz-Pizarro with the Costa Blanca Open .

At the Derby City Classic 2011, Appleton won the 14.1 Challenge for the second time after 2008. In February 2011 he reached the semi-finals of the 8-Ball World Cup and lost there, as in the previous year, to Niels Feijen. After finishing fifth at the Philippines Open and Ultimate 10-Ball Championship in April 2011, he was eliminated in the round of 32 at the 10-Ball World Cup . At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2011 he lost to Shane van Boening in the round of 16 . In September 2011 he made it to the semifinals of the World Pool Masters , in which he lost 7: 8 to the eventual winner of the tournament Ralf Souquet . In October 2011 he won the World Class Open. A few days later he succeeded in defending his title at the US Open by beating Shawn Putnam in the final . Also in October 2011 he won the International Challenge of Champions . At the Treviso Open 2011 he reached the semi-finals and lost it to David Alcaide.

In January 2012, Appleton was third in the one-pocket competition of the Derby City Classic. After losing to Li Hewen in the round of 32 at the 8-Ball World Cup and losing the final to Shane van Boening at the US Open in the One Pocket, he succeeded in the 9-Ball World Cup in June 2012 the move into the final, in which he defeated Li Hewen with 13:12 and thus became world champion for the second time. A few weeks later he came in second at the World Series of Pool and third at the 2012 World 14.1 Tournament. At the World Pool Masters 2012 he was eliminated in the round of 16. A few days later, he managed to successfully defend his title at the International Challenge of Champions. At the US Open in 9-Ball, however, he finished seventh after two titles in a row.

Appleton finished fourth in 9-ball at the 2013 US Bar Box Championship. He finished fourth in the 2013 Ultimate 10-Ball Championship. In July 2013 he moved into the final of the 9-ball competition at the World Games , where he defeated Chang Jung-Lin from Taiwan with 11:10. In August 2013 he reached the final of the World 14.1 Tournament , which he lost to Thorsten Hohmann . At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2013 , he was eliminated as defending champion in the round of 32 against Hohmann, who later became world champion. In October 2013, he finished ninth at the US Open . At the World Pool Masters 2013 he made it to the final, which he lost 6-8 to Niels Feijen.

In January 2014, Appleton reached third place in the first ever World Chinese 8-Ball Masters . At the US Bar Box Championship 2014 he lost the 8-ball final to Corey Deuel. After he was eliminated in the round of 32 at the China Open and the 9-Ball World Cup in June 2014 , he won the World 14.1 Tournament in August 2014 with a 200:27 win in the final against Shane van Boening . At the World Pool Masters 2014 he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Alex Pagulayan .

At the World Chinese 8-Ball Masters 2015 , Appleton took 17th place. In February 2015, after winning against Neil Robertson and Chu Bingjie , among others , he moved into the final of the Chinese 8-Ball World Championship , in which he defeated former snooker world champion Mark Selby 21:19. A few weeks later he was eliminated from the 10-Ball World Cup in the round of 32. In July 2015 he lost the final of the World 14.1 Tournament against Thorsten Hohmann. A month later he reached the final of the World Pool Masters and lost it 2: 8 against Shane van Boening. At the 9-ball world championship in 2015 he reached the round of 16. In October 2015, at the American 14.1 Championship , he successfully defended his title in the final against Thorsten Hohmann.

In March 2016, Appleton was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Chinese 8-Ball World Championship against Shi Hanqing , the eventual winner of the tournament, and then defeated Li Bo in the game for third place with 15:14. At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2016 , he was eliminated in the preliminary round. At the World 14.1 Tournament 2016 he was defeated in the quarterfinals to the Scot Jayson Shaw . In October 2016 he retired from the American 14.1 Championship after two wins in previous years, now in the preliminary round. At the Kuwait Open 2016 he reached the second round.

Appleton has participated in the World Cup of Pool six times so far .
