Ko Pin-yi (born May 31, 1989 ) is a Taiwanese pool player . In 2015 he became world champion in the 10-ball and 9-ball disciplines .

After Ko had already reached 33rd place at the 9-ball World Cup in 2005 at the age of 16, he became junior vice world champion in 2006 . In the final he lost to his compatriot Wu Yu-lun . A year later he won the final against Wu. At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2007 , Ko again reached the round of 64, but lost against the Serb Goran Mladenovic with 8:10. In May 2008 Ko was eliminated from the World Pool Masters after victories against Ralf Souquet and Tony Drago in the semifinals against the Finn Mika Immonen . At the Qatar World Open 9-Ball Tournament he was ninth. In October Ko reached the sixteenth finals at the 10-Ball World Cup , which he lost to Immonen. He was also Junior World Champion again in 2008. At the Asian 9-Ball Tour he won a medal for the first time by finishing third.

In 2009, Ko finished fifth at the Japan Open and 13th at the Philippines Open. In June 2009 he reached 17th place at the China Open . At the Qatar World Open 9-Ball Tournament he managed to reach the final. In this he was defeated by the Finn Immonen. In 2010, Ko finished fifth again at the Japan Open. At 8-Ball-WM he reached the last sixteen, which he lost against the Englishman Darren Appleton with 8:10. At the World Pool Masters in May 2010, Ko was eliminated in the preliminary round. A few days later he finished 17th in the 10-ball at the US Open . At the 9-ball world championship , Ko lost the round of 16 against eventual world champion Francisco Bustamante with 8:11. At the China Open in September 2010, Ko also came in 17th place. In the Asian Games, however, he reached the semi-finals, in which he was defeated by the Filipino Warren Kiamco 7: 9. At the All Japan Open Championship 2010 Ko was ninth.

In June 2011 Ko finished ninth at the China Open. A few days later he also reached the round of 16 at the 9-Ball World Cup . He lost there against the Englishman Daryl Peach with 9:11. In July 2011, Ko won the World Series of Pool . In November he also won the All Japan Open Championship in the final against Wu Jiaqing . In 2012 Ko Pin-yi was eliminated from the 8-ball World Cup and the 9-ball World Cup in the quarter-finals. At the China Open in September, he finished 17th. In October 2012, Ko finished ninth at the World Pool Masters and reached 25th place at the 9-Ball US Open . He finished fifth at the All Japan Championship in 2012.

Ko finished ninth at the 2013 China Open. At the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games 2013 , Ko won the gold medal in the men's 9-ball with a 9: 4 final victory against the Kuwaiti Abdullah Al-Yousef . In July 2013 he also reached fifth place at both the 10-Ball US Open and the US Open in 8-Ball. At the 9-Ball World Cup , Ko reached the round of 16, but lost it against the eventual runner-up Antonio Gabica with 9:11. In November 2013 he won the All Japan Championship for the second time with a 11:10 final win over his compatriot Chang Jung-Lin .

In 2014, Ko took 17th place at the China Open . Also in June 2014 he reached the round of 16 of the 9-ball World Cup , but was eliminated there against Carlo Biado from the Philippines . In July 2014, Ko Pin-yi won the CSI Invitational 10-Ball Championship in the final against his younger brother Ko Ping-chung and finished third in the CSI Invitational 8-Ball Championship.

In February 2015, Ko made it into the final of the 10-Ball World Cup after winning the semifinals against his brother. In the final he defeated the Filipino Carlo Biado 11: 9 and thus became world champion for the first time. By winning the title, he achieved second place, his best position in the world rankings to date . At the World Pool Masters 2015 he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Mark Gray . In September 2015, after victories against Carlo Biado, John Morra , Warren Kiamco and Wu Jiaqing , Ko reached the final of the 9-Ball World Championship and won it 13:11 against the American Shane van Boening . After the World Cup he was number one in the world for the first time and stayed that way until August 2016.

At the Chinese 8-Ball World Championship 2016 , Ko reached the second round. In August 2016, he was eliminated from the 9-Ball World Championship in the round of 64 against the Scot Jayson Shaw . At the China Open 2016 he reached the semi-finals, in which he was defeated by the eventual tournament winner Wu Jiaqing 6:11. He finished ninth at the 2016 US Open . In November 2016 he was eliminated from the semifinals of the Kuwait Open at 10:11 against eventual tournament winner Jayson Shaw. At the end of the month he won the All Japan Championship for the third time with an 11: 3 win in the final against the Philippine Jeffrey de Luna .

So far Ko has participated in the World Cup of Pool four times . He initially reached the semi-finals three times. In 2010 he lost together with Chang Jung-Lin against the Filipinos Ronato Alcano and Dennis Orcollo 8: 9, in 2011 he and his brother Ko Ping-chung were eliminated against the Thais Nitiwat Kanjanasri and Kobkit Palajin , and in 2013 he and Chang lost to the eventual winners Lee Van Corteza and Dennis Orcollo 7: 9. In 2015 he won the World Cup of Pool together with Chang Yu-Lung by beating England's Mark Gray and Daryl Peach 10: 8 in the final .

In addition, Ko took part in the Team World Cup twice with the Taiwanese national team . After he became world champion in 2012 with this, with a 4-0 win against Japan, the quarter-finals against the later runner-up, the Philippines , followed in 2014 .

In 2010, Ko won the Asia versus Europe Challenge Match with the Asian team .
