The WPA 8-ball World Cup 2011 (officially: WPA Etisalat World 8-Ball Championship in 2011 ) was the sixth staging of the World Pool-Billiard Association hosted world championship in billiards discipline 8-Ball . It took place from February 19 to 26, 2011 at the Fujairah Tennis Center in Fujairah ( United Arab Emirates ).

Dennis Orcollo from the Philippines became world champion with a 10-3 win in the final against Niels Feijen from the Netherlands . The Spaniard David Alcaide won the game for 3rd place 9-2 against the Englishman Darren Appleton .

Defending champion was the Englishman Karl Boyes , who was eliminated in the round of 32 against Mika Immonen .

mode

A total of 112 players took part in the tournament. This means that the field of participants has almost doubled compared to previous years when there were 64 each.

First of all, the field of participants was halved in 14 groups of eight players each. The game was played in a double knockout system . This means: After the first game, the players were divided into a winning round and a losing round. Whoever was in the winning round only had to win one game against another player who had won in the first round to advance to the final round. In the losers round, on the other hand, you first had to assert yourself against another player who had lost in the first game and then win against a loser from the winning round.

Even if this system is relatively complicated, it guarantees every player to be able to lose a game in the preliminary round without having to be eliminated from the tournament immediately. The second lost game within the preliminary round will in any case lead to elimination from the tournament.

The 56 remaining players then played in the final round in the knockout system , with the eight players with the best statistics starting the preliminary round with a bye to get onto a 64th field.
