The WPA-9-Ball World Championship 2017 was the 26th edition of the world championship in the pool discipline 9-ball . It took place from December 9-14 , 2017 in the al-Attiya Sports Arena of the al-Arabi Sports Club in Doha . The Qatari capital hosted the 9-ball World Cup for the eighth time in a row.
World champion was the Filipino Carlo Biado , who defeated his compatriot Roland Garcia 13: 5 in the final. Third place went to Taiwanese Wu Kun-lin and Albanian Eklent Kaçi . The defending champion was the Austrian Albin Ouschan , who was eliminated in the round of 16 against Wu Kun-lin. The world number one Chang Jung-Lin lost in the round of 64 the Canadian John Morra .
Mode and qualification
128 players take part in the tournament. 24 players qualified via the world rankings . A total of 92 starting places were allocated according to a quota by the continental or regional associations as well as the host Qatari association and the sponsors. A qualification tournament took place from December 5 to 7, 2017, in which 96 participants played the other 12 starting places in three knockout competitions .
At the main tournament, the 128 participants were initially divided into 16 groups of 8 players, in which they competed against each other from December 9th to 11th in a double knockout system . Four players from each group qualified for the final round, which took place from December 12th to 14th and was played in a knockout system. The game was played with an alternating break.
