The World Championship in 10-Ball 2009 was the second edition of this tournament and took place between November 25th and 30th, 2009 in the World Trade Center in Manila ( Philippines ).

The world championship was organized by the WPA ( World Pool-Billiard Association ) and Raya Sport . Defending champion was Darren Appleton from England , who secured his first world title in this discipline last year with a 13:11 win in the final against Wu Chia-Ching from Taiwan .

In 2009 the Finn Mika Immonen won with an 11: 6 final victory over local hero Lee Van Corteza .

regulate

A total of 128 players from around 40 nations took part in the tournament. In contrast to the previous year, women were not allowed to start this time, as the WPA also initiated a 10-ball women’s World Cup for the first time .

In the preliminary round, the number of players was reduced from 128 to 64. The game is initially played in a double knockout system . This means: After the first game, the players were divided into a winning round and a losing round. Whoever was in the winning round only had to prevail in one game against another player who had won in the first round to get to the final round. In the losers round, however, you first had to assert yourself against another player who lost in the first game and then win against a loser from the winning round.

Even if this system is relatively complicated, it guarantees every player to be able to lose a game in the preliminary round without having to be eliminated from the tournament immediately. The second lost game within the preliminary round will in any case lead to elimination from the tournament.

In the final round, the game is played in the knockout system , so every defeat leads to elimination from the tournament.
