Naoyuki Ōi ( Japanese 大 井 直 幸 , Ōi Naoyuki ; born January 10, 1983 , Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese pool player .

Career

In July 2005 Naoyuki Ōi retired from the 9-ball world championship in the preliminary round. In February 2007, he finished fifth in the Korea Pro Pool Tour and ninth in the Predator International Championship . At the World Pool Masters 2007 he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Oliver Ortmann . In October 2007 Ōi finished 17th at the US Open , at the 9-Ball World Cup 2007 he was defeated by the German Ralf Souquet in the round of 64 .

After Ōi was eliminated in the preliminary round at the 8-Ball World Championship in April 2008, he was fifth at the Qatar World Open. In October he was eliminated in the round of 64 of the 10-Ball World Cup . In November Ōi achieved its greatest international success to date; at the All Japan Open he was third. In 2009 Ōi reached the sixteenth finals of the 10-ball World Cup , but lost to Antonio Lining .

In March 2010, Naoyuki Ōi reached fifth place at the Japan Open . At the World Pool Masters 2010 he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Charlie Williams . At the World Series of Pool , Ōi was fifth in 2010. In 2011, Ōi was eliminated from the 8-ball World Cup in the preliminary round, at the 10-Ball World Cup in the round of 64 against Oliver Ortmann and at the 9-Ball World Cup in the sixteenth-finals against Antonio Gabica . At the US Open he came in 13th place.

In June 2012 Naoyuki Ōi reached after victories against Chang Jung-Lin , Thorsten Hohmann and Karl Boyes the semi-finals of the 9-ball world championship , in which he was defeated by the eventual world champion Darren Appleton 7:11. In 2013 and 2014 he was eliminated in the sixteenth finals, due to defeats against Vilmos Földes and Ko Pin-yi . At the All Japan Championship 2014 Ōi reached the final, but lost it against Raymund Faraon with 8:11.

In January 2015 Naoyuki Ōi finished seventeenth at the World Chinese 8-Ball Masters . After reaching the round of 32 at the 2015 China Open , he was eliminated in September 2015 at the 9-Ball World Cup in the round of 64 against Aloysius Yapp . The All Japan Championship 2015 , in which he was a finalist last year, also ended for him in the round of 64.

At the 9-ball world championship in 2016 he was eliminated in the preliminary round. A few days later he reached the round of 16 at the China Open . In October 2016, he finished 17th at the US Open . At the Kuwait Open 2016 , however, he was eliminated in the preliminary round, at the All Japan Championship 2016 in the round of 64. In January 2017 he reached the quarter-finals at the Molinari Players Championship , the first tournament of the newly introduced World Pool Series , in which he was defeated by the later finalist Lee Van Corteza with 13:15. A month later he moved into the quarter-finals for the first time in his third participation in the World Pool Masters with an 8: 6 win against Cheng Yu-hsuan , in which he lost 4: 8 to the reigning 9-ball world champion Albin Ouschan .

Naoyuki Ōi has participated in the World Cup of Pool six times so far . In 2007 he reached the semifinals with Satoshi Kawabata , in which they lost to the eventual winners of the tournament, Li Hewen and Fu Jianbo . In 2008 Ōi and Kawabata were eliminated in the quarterfinals. With Tōru Kuribayashi as a double partner, Ōi was eliminated in the round of 16 in 2010 , as well as in 2012 with Kawabata. 2013 Naoyuki Ōi and Lo Li-wen reached the quarter-finals. In 2015 he formed the Japanese team again with Tōru Kuribayashi and reached the semi-finals.

With the Japanese national team, Ōi has so far participated in the team world championship three times . After the knockout in the round of 16 in 2010 , he and the team were runner-up in the 2012 final against Taiwan. In 2014 , the semi-final against eventual world champion China 2 followed .

Trivia

During the World Pool Masters 2017 he caused a sensation with two interviews with the television channel Sky Sports . Ōi, who speaks and understands very little English , did not go into more detail on Tony Wrighton's questions and answered, among other things, with an excerpt from the song Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen by comedian Kazuhito Kosaka .
