PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen) ( jap. ペンパイナッポーアッポーペン; Hepburn : Pen-painappō-APPO-pen ) is a song of Japanese comedian and singer-songwriter Pikotaro (Jap. ピコ太郎 Pikotarō ; real name: Kazuhito Kosaka (Japanese 古 坂 和 仁 Kosaka Kazuhito )). As a music video , it was released on YouTube on August 25, 2016 and then went viral afterwards . As of November 7, 2016, the official video has been viewed more than 100 million times and has been hailed as the new " Gangnam Style " in various newspapers and online media. The single reached # 1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and was named the shortest single on the Billboard Hot 100 . At the end of 2016, the song reached number 6 on the Japan Hot 100 annual charts.

PPAP , along with three other works by Pikotaro , was published on Internet distribution platforms via Avex Music Creative on October 7, 2016 . An instrumental version of the song was released on October 12, 2016.

The song was written in the key of C sharp minor in four-four time at a tempo of 136 bpm . His vowel parts range from F♯ 3 to C♯ 5 .

Origin background

The text of the song was conceived as a parody and expresses itself negatively towards the English language and especially the Japanese English lessons. The sentence "I have a pen." Is known in Japan as a standard sentence that all primary school students learn as the first practice sentence in English lessons, but there mostly in the modified form "This is a pen." The following sentences in the text are both grammatically incorrect ("I have an apple" and "I have pineapple"), which, according to a statement by the author Pikotaro, should clarify the foolishness.

Viral spread

A month after the song was released, it reached 1 million views. On September 27, 2016, Canadian singer Justin Bieber shared the video on Twitter and titled it as "Favorite Video on the Internet". Since then, the video has gone viral, averaging 1.5 million views per day, and as the new "Gangnam Style" touted by various newspapers and online media. It was also distributed by other YouTubers who created their own version of it (so-called parodies ). The video reached number 1 on the YouTube music charts and was able to hold that position for three weeks in a row.

The song debuted at number four on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 on October 22, 2016. The following week, it reached number three and two weeks later it reached number two. After dropping to number three, the song topped the charts in the week of November 14, 2016.

The song debuted at number 77 on the United States' Billboard Hot 100 and with a duration of 45 seconds it was named the shortest song in the history of the charts. The previous shortest song was Little Boxes by The Womenfolk , which peaked at number 83 in 1964 with a duration of 1 minute and 2 seconds. This has also been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records . The song appeared several times on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 82 in the week of November 26th and number 93 in the week of December 3rd.
