Ricardo Brey

Ricardo Brey (* 1955 in Havana ) is a Cuban conceptual artist , sculptor , installation artist and draftsman .

In 1981 Brey, together with Ana Mendieta and Gustavo Pérez Monzón , took part in the group exhibition “Volume I” at the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam in Havana. The exhibition caused a scandal in the Cuban art world, drawing 8,000 visitors in two weeks. The break with Cuban art tradition was spectacular; the conceptual works of art presented stood in stark contrast to the paintings and sculptures that the Cuban public was used to seeing.

Jan Hoet discovered Brey's work at the 3rd Havana Biennale in 1990. Ricardo Brey has lived in Belgium since 1991. In 1992 he took part in documenta IX in Kassel and gave the installation on permanent loan to the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst .

The themes of his artistic work are the relationship between man and nature, the interaction between different cultures and religions. Brey deals with the cultural identity of people, especially with his own roots in Afro-Cuban culture.

Ricardo Brei received a Guggenheim grant in 1997 and the Prijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap in 1998

The graphic project Universe (2002–2006), comprising 1004 drawings, was shown in the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst and gives the impression of being an encyclopedia of the various materials and techniques used by Brey. Annex (2003–2009) has fish, birds, insects, plants and the moon as motifs. Fuel to the fire was exhibited in 2015 at the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerp . The solo exhibition The Futility of Good Intentions took place in 2014 at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes . In 2015 Brey was a participant in the 56th Venice Biennale .
