The Womenfolk were an American folk band.

biography

In 1963, when the Folkära was coming to an end, two producers from Los Angeles had the idea of putting together a female folk quintet. Joyce James, Leni Ashmore, Barbara Cooper, Judy Fine and Terry Harley, who was replaced shortly afterwards by Elaine Gealer, from Pasadena , California , then merged to form The Womenfolk and were signed by the New York label RCA Victor .

Their first release came out that same year, a live album from a performance with the Villagers . The following year they released the band name as a title-bearing debut album with two of their most famous pieces, Love Come A-Tricklin 'Down and Little Boxes . The latter had previously been popularized by Pete Seeger and its live version hit the US charts in early 1964. Then her recording was released as a single and also made it to the US charts at number 83. The song was arranged by the later Grammy winner Perry Botkin junior and is the shortest recording at just 1 minute and 2 seconds ever made the Billboard Hot 100 . After the success of the song, the album also entered the charts.

During the recording of the second studio album Never Underestimate the Power of the Womenfolk , Jean Amos, who had previously appeared with Penny Palmer as Penny & Jean, took the place of Elaine Gealer and that remained the cast until the end. Another studio and a live album followed, without the women getting anywhere near the success of Little Boxes . Although they adjusted themselves musically and moved more towards pop music, the British Invasion had ousted them in the mid-1960s and the band broke up in 1967.

Afterwards, some members remained loyal to the music, but without appearing larger. Leni Ashmore appeared in the musical Hair in Los Angeles . Judy Fine recorded a CD of her own songs in the 2000s. Joyce James worked for a while in New York on radio and television. She died in 2001.
