The World Championship in 10-Ball 2008 was the first edition of this tournament and took place between September 29 and October 5, 2008 in the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila ( Philippines ).

The world championship is organized by the WPA ( World Pool-Billiard Association ). World champion was Darren Appleton from England with a 13:11 victory in the final against Wu Chia-Ching from Taiwan . Niels Feijen won the game for third place against Demosthenes Pulpul 11: 8.

However, many top Filipino players such as Efren Reyes , Francisco Bustamante , Dennis Orcollo , Ronato Alcano , and Alex Pagulayan were absent from the World Cup because their management company BMPAP is at odds with World Cup organizer Raya Sports .

regulate

A total of 128 players from 43 nations took part in the tournament. With Yuan-Chun Lin , Shin-Mei Liu and Jasmin Ouschan , three women also qualified for the World Cup. This is possible because there is no separate women's world championship in 10-ball (similar to 8-ball; however, in contrast to 9-ball) and women are therefore eligible to compete in the men's world championship.

The game was played with an alternating break. This means that it takes turns to kick, regardless of who won the previous rack.

In the preliminary round, the number of players was reduced from 128 to 64. The game was initially played in a double knockout system . This means: After the first game, the players were divided into a winning round and a losing round. Whoever was in the winning round only had to prevail in one game against another player who had won in the first round to get to the final round. In the losers round, however, you first had to assert yourself against another player who lost in the first game and then win against a loser from the winning round.

Even if this system is relatively complicated, it guarantees every player to be able to lose a game in the preliminary round without having to be eliminated from the tournament immediately. The second lost game within the preliminary round will in any case lead to elimination from the tournament.

In the final round it was then played in the knockout system , so every defeat led to elimination from the tournament.
