Preliminary round
Aloysius Yapp from Singapore provided the first major surprise of the tournament . In the first round, the reigning junior world champion defeated world number two and former 9-ball world champion Darren Appleton in a high-class game with 9: 5. After a loss to Mark Gray , Yapp qualified for the second time for the final round of a 9-ball World Cup by beating Kuwaiti Omar al-Shaheen . Appleton meanwhile won both games of the losers' round, making it into the round of 64.
Defending champion Niels Feijen from the Netherlands lost 8: 9 to the reigning 10-ball European champion Alexander Kazakis after his opening win and then met the South Korean Ryu Seung-woo in the losing round . After Feijen had meanwhile led 5: 1 and 8: 5, Ryu won the game 9: 8 and qualified for the fourth time in a row for the final round of a 9-ball World Cup. For the first time since 2010 , the defending champion was eliminated in the preliminary round.
In addition to Appleton and Feijen, eight other former 9-ball world champions took part. While Yukio Akakariyama , Mika Immonen and Wu Jiaqing reached the final round directly via the winning round, Chao Fong-Pang and Ralf Souquet each lost their second match and only got into the knockout phase via the loser's round. Oliver Ortmann , Thorsten Hohmann and Daryl Peach were eliminated in the preliminary round. Ortmann lost to Immonen in the winning round and Denis Grabe in the losing round . After his first round victory, Hohmann surprisingly lost against Venezuelan Jalal Yousef and then retired against reigning 9-ball European champion Francisco Díaz-Pizarro . Peach lost after his opening win against Mike Dechaine and Mishel Turkey , who was the only one of the eight participating Qataris to reach the round of 64 after the elimination of Waleed Majid and Bashar Hussain .
Abdul Rahman al-Amar caused another surprise. In his second World Cup participation, he defeated Hichem Benaissa and world number twelfth Johann Chua , making him the second Saudi Arabian to reach the final of a 9-ball World Cup. The reigning 10-ball world champion Ko Pin-yi , his brother Ko Ping-chung and 10-ball runner-up Carlo Biado , last year's semi-finalist Chang Yu-Lung , and World Pool Masters winner Shane van Boening also reached and the 8-ball world champion from 2011 Dennis Orcollo the final round to the winning round, while the 8-ball world champions Karl Boyes and Chang Jung-Lin were eliminated in the preliminary round.
The world number one Albin Ouschan from Austria was defeated by the Japanese Satoshi Kawabata 8: 9 after his opening win and thus missed the direct qualification for the final round. In the losing round he defeated the Indonesian Irsal Nasution 9: 8 and thus only narrowly escaped the preliminary round. Mario He reached after his first round defeat to John Morra the round of 64 over the losers round.
With Niels Feijen, Albin Ouschan, Ralf Souquet as well as David Alcaide , Nick van den Berg and Roman Hybler , six Bundesliga players took part in the World Cup, of which Alcaide, Ouschan and Souquet reached the final round. After Oliver Ortmann's elimination in the preliminary round, the Dutchman Marco Teutscher was the only player in the 2nd Bundesliga to reach the round of 64.

Ko then defeated Warren Kiamco and John Morra, reaching a World Cup semi-finals for the second time in his career.
The Chinese Wu Jiaqing won in the sixteenth finals with 11: 6 against the world number leader Albin Ouschan from Austria and then reached the semifinals after victories against his compatriot Wang Can and Aloysius Yapp . Yapp had won in the round of 16 with 11:10 against the 10-ball European champion Alexander Kazakis .
Ko Ping-chung , who had defeated Mario He in the round of 64, won 11: 9 in the round of sixteen against former world champion Yukio Akakariyama and after a narrow knockout 16 win against Mike Dechaine with a 11: 5 win in the quarter-finals against Wojciech Szewczyk made it to the semi-finals. In the round of 16, Szewczyk defeated the last player in the German Bundesliga with Spaniard David Alcaide with 11:10.
The fourth semi-finalist was Shane van Boening from the USA. After 11: 5 wins against 9-ball European champion Francisco Díaz-Pizarro and last year's third Chang Yu-Lung , he won the quarterfinals against Dennis Orcollo 11: 1 and reached the semi-finals of a world championship for the first time in his career. Since Johnny Archer in 2010 , he was also the first American to finish in the last four at a World Cup.
In the semifinals, Shane van Boening won a one-sided game 11-1 against Ko Ping-chung. In the other semi-final Ko Pin-yi managed to turn a 4-6 deficit against Wu Jiaqing and win 11:10.
