Yukio Akakariyama ( Japanese 赤 狩 山 幸 男 , Akakariyama Yukio ; born March 13, 1975 , Osaka Prefecture ) is a Japanese pool player . In 2011 he became world champion in the 9-ball discipline .

Career

In November 2008 Akakariyama finished ninth at the Japan Open . In June 2009 he reached the semi-finals of the China Open . In October 2009 he was thirteenth at the US Open . A month later, he made it to the finals of the 10-ball world championship , in which he was defeated by Taiwanese Chao Fong-Pang in the round of 64.

In February 2010 he achieved his best result so far on the Euro Tour with the round of 16 at the French Open . In April 2010 he reached the last sixteen of the 8-Ball World Cup , which he lost against Ruslan Tschinachow 7:10. At the 9-Ball World Cup 2010 he was eliminated in the round of 64 against Oliver Medenilla . In November 2010 he reached the semifinals of the All Japan Open.

At the 2011 8-Ball World Cup , Akakariyama was eliminated in the round of 56. In May 2011 he reached the semi-finals of the 10-Ball World Cup and was defeated there by the eventual world champion Huidji See 6: 9. A month later, he made it to the quarter-finals of the China Open. At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2011 , he made it into the final after winning against Karlo Dalmatin , Carlo Biado and Mark Gray . There he defeated the Filipino Ronato Alcano with 13:11 and became 9-ball world champion. In September 2011 Akakariyama took part in the World Pool Masters for the only time so far and was eliminated in the round of 16 against Raj Hundal . A month later he was ninth at the US Open.

In February 2012 Akakariyama reached the round of 16 of the 8-Ball World Cup and lost there to Roberto Gomez . At the 9-Ball World Cup in 2012 , he was eliminated in the round of 32 against Thorsten Hohmann . In September 2012 he reached the semi-finals of the China Open. At the World Games 2013 he made it to the quarter-finals, in which he lost 7:11 to the Chinese Liu Haitao . After he was eliminated in the preliminary round at the 9-Ball World Championships in 2013 and 2014 , he reached the final round again in 2015 and was eliminated in the round of sixteen against Ko Ping-chung .

Akakariyama has so far participated in the World Cup of Pool once. In 2011 he formed the Japanese team with Lo Li-wen and reached the round of 16.

With the Japanese national team, he took part in the team world championships in 2010 and 2012 and was runner-up in 2012.
