Joshua Filler (born October 2, 1997 ) is a German pool player from Bönen . He became world champion in the 9-ball discipline in 2018 . He had previously won the China Open in 2017 as the youngest player to date and became European 10-ball champion in 2018 . In 2019 he won the US Open and was runner-up in the 10-ball world championship .

With the German national team, Filler was European team champion in 2016. In 2017 he won the Mosconi Cup with the European team and was the first German to receive the award for most valuable player .

Career

2004–2014: Beginnings and Youth

Joshua Filler began at the age of seven years with the billiards . In 2009 he became vice European champion with the German school team . At the German men's championship , he reached thirteenth place in the 9-ball . After he did not get more than fifth place in 8-ball at the German youth championship in 2010 , he was eliminated from the men's 9-ball quarter-finals against Yuri Pisklov . In February 2011 he reached the finals of a Euro Tour tournament at the French Open for the first time and lost in the round of sixteen against the Portuguese Manuel Gama . A few months later, he was the first player ever to become German Youth Champion in all four disciplines (8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball and 14/1 endless ) in one year. In August 2011 he became European champion with the German school team . In addition, he became vice European champion for students in 8-ball and 9-ball. In September 2011, Filler retired from the Junior World Championships without a win. A month later he reached the quarter-finals of the men's 10-ball national championship . At the German championship in 2011 , he finished ninth in 9-ball.

In 2012 he managed to defend three of his German B-youth championship titles, only losing the final against Raphael Wahl in the 9-ball . In addition, he was 8-ball and 10-ball European champion among the pupils as well as vice European champion in 14/1 endlessly, through a final defeat against election, and with the team. He won three bronze medals at the German men's championship. He lost the 14/1 semifinals against the future German champion Andreas Roschkowsky , in 8-ball he was defeated 7: 8 by Marlin Koehler and again in 10-ball to Roschkowsky. At the Junior World Championship in 2012 he reached the quarter-finals and lost there to Berk Mehmetcik 5: 9.

In 2013, Filler became German B youth champion in 9-ball, second in 8-ball and third in 14/1 endless, as well as European student champion in 8-ball and 14/1 endless. In the 9-ball he reached third place. In 2014 he won the German A-Youth championship in the disciplines 14/1 endless, 9-ball and 10-ball and took third place in 8-ball. In the 10-ball and 14/1 endless he became junior European champion in 2014 , in the 9-ball semifinals he lost to later European champion Raphael Wahl. At the Junior World Championship , he was eliminated again in the quarterfinals. At the Slovenian Open 2014 he was defeated by the Austrian Albin Ouschan in the round of 32 .

2015–2016: national successes

In April 2015 Filler became German U-19 champion in 8-ball and runner-up in 14/1 endless. In the 9-ball competition he was disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct after winning the semifinals against Jannik Schmitt . In July 2015 he reached the quarterfinals of the World 14.1 Tournament and was defeated there by the Filipino Warren Kiamco . At the Austrian Open 2015 he won his first Euro Tour medal; after defeating the former European champions Stephan Cohen and Marcus Chamat as well as Sebastian Ludwig , among others , he lost the final 7: 9 against Niels Feijen . In November 2015, Filler became the German men's champion for the first time . After winning both the quarter-finals against Manuel Ederer and the semi-finals against Sascha Jülichmanns with a 125 series in the second shot, he defeated Raphael Wahl in the 14/1 endless final with 125: 88. He then became German 8-ball champion with an 8: 3 win against Geronimo Weißenberger and was eliminated in the round of 16 of the 9-ball competition against Kevin Becker . On the final day of the German championship, he also won the 10-ball title in the final against Juri Pisklov.

In January 2016, Filler retired from the final tournament of the German Tour 2015, which he finished first in the overall ranking, in the round of 16 against Sebastian Staab . Three months later he took part in the men's European championship for the first time. He was nominated by the German Billiard Union for the 8-ball and 9-ball competitions. After he was eliminated in 8-ball in the round of 64 against Mats Schjetne , he made it into the final in 9-ball, in which he lost 3: 9 to the Spaniard Francisco Sánchez . A few days later he was eliminated in the semifinals of the Austrian Open 2016 against eventual tournament winner Mark Gray . In June 2016 he won the Deurne City Classics 10-ball competition in the final against Nikos Ekonomopoulos .

In August 2016, Filler took part in the 9-ball world championship for the first time in Doha . After an opening defeat against Dang Jinhu , he defeated the Algerian Abder Rehman Mebarki 9-0, before finally losing 3: 9 to the later semi-finalist Cheng Yu-hsuan and thus eliminated in the preliminary round. At the Albanian Open 2016 he reached the final, in which he was defeated by Poland's Mateusz Śniegocki 4-9 . In November 2016 he retired from the preliminary round of the Kuwait Open, which was held for the first time . At the German championship in 2016 he won the bronze medal in 8-ball and, after a 9-4 final victory over André Lackner , the title in 9-ball. After winning three titles in the previous year, he was the first men's player to become German champion in all four disciplines. At the end of November he made it into the final for the third time on the Euro Tour at the Treviso Open 2016 and was defeated 6: 9 by the Spaniard David Alcaide .

2017: international breakthrough

In January 2017, Filler retired from the final tournament of the German Tour 2016, in which he was second , in the round of 32 against Klaudio Kerec . At the Italian Open 2017 he was also eliminated in the sixteenth-finals, he was defeated by Russian Sergei Luzker 8: 9. He was unable to take part in the 2017 European Championship for school reasons. At the Portugal Open 2017 , which took place after the EM , he reached the quarter-finals, where he lost 8: 9 to Mark Gray. By reaching the quarter-finals, as Gray was eliminated in the semi-finals, he reached second place in the one-year ranking of the Euro Tour and thus qualified for the 9-ball competition of the World Games 2017 in Wroclaw . At the Austrian Open 2017 he made it into a Euro Tour semi-finals for the fifth time and lost to the Spaniard Francisco Sánchez 7: 9. In June 2017 he won a world ranking tournament for the first time when he defeated Taiwanese Chang Jung-Lin 11: 6 in the final of the China Open . At 19, he is the youngest ever winner of the Shanghai tournament . In July 2017 he was eliminated in the first round of the World Games with 5:11 against the later gold medalist Carlo Biado . A little later he won both competitions at the U23 European Championship, which was held for the first time . In the 8-ball he won the final against the Portuguese Samuel Santos with 8: 2, in the 9-ball final he defeated the Lithuanian Pijus Labutis after a 1: 4 deficit with 9: 7. He finished ninth at the 2017 US Open . In November 2017, he did not get past the second round of the German championship . A few days later, he finished second and third at the Accu-Stats event in New Jersey . At the 9-Ball World Championship in 2017 , he made it into the final round for the first time with wins against Damianos Giallourakis and Kong Dejing . He then defeated Ahmad Naiem and Mateusz Śniegocki before he had to admit defeat to Myanmar Maung Maung 6:11 in the round of 16 .

2018: World Championship

In early 2018, Filler finished fifth in the 9-ball competition of the Derby City Classic . In March 2018 he took part in the World Pool Masters for the first time . At the invitation tournament in Gibraltar , however, he was eliminated in the first round against Jayson Shaw (5-8). A little later he won the Interpool Open in Uppsala with an 11: 4 final victory over Tomas Larsson . Also in the final against Larsson, he secured the title at the side event, the Interpool 10-Ball Challenge. At the Sankt Johann im Pongau Open 2018 he reached the quarterfinals. In June 2018 he achieved his first tournament victory at the World Pool Series . After being eliminated without a win in his first participation in April, he lost his opening game against Shane van Boening at the Rasson 10-Ball Masters . Then he fought his way to the final with seven wins in a row, in which he prevailed against Alexander Kazakis with 17:10 .

In the summer of 2018, Filler played for the second time at the Men's European Championship . He was nominated for the 10-ball, 8-ball and 9-ball disciplines. In the first of the three competitions he moved into the final after winning against former European champions Tomasz Kapłan and Ruslan Tschinachow , among others . In his second European Championship final he defeated the former world champion Albin Ouschan 8: 5 and thus became 10-ball European champion. In the 8-ball he reached the semifinals, in which he was defeated by the Poland Konrad Juszczyszyn 6-8 . After defeating Niels Feijen in the first knockout round, the 9-ball quarter-finals saw the re-edition of the 2016 European Championship finals, in which Filler now retaliated 9: 8 against Francisco Sánchez. In the semifinals, however, Filler narrowly failed at the eventual European champion Konrad Juszczyszyn (8: 9).

Following the European Championship, Filler reached the round of 16 at the Veldhoven Open , whereas he missed the same round at the third WPS tournament of the year a few days later with a defeat in the decisive preliminary round match against Petri Makkonen . At the beginning of September, the sixteenth finals of the China Open saw the relaunch of the previous year's final , in which the Taiwanese Chang Jung-Lin took revenge with an 11: 7 victory. After he was eliminated in the preliminary round at the Leende Open , Filler reached the quarter-finals at the last two Euro Tour tournaments in 2018 ( Klagenfurt Open and Treviso Open ).

In December 2018, Filler's third participation in the 9-ball world championship followed . In Doha he defeated Nick Malai , Robbie Capito , Albin Ouschan and Alexander Kazakis, among others , and finally moved into the final, in which he prevailed against defending champion Carlo Biado with 13:10. After Oliver Ortmann (1995), Ralf Souquet (1996) and Thorsten Hohmann (2003, 2013) he became the fourth German world champion in 9-ball. At 21 years, 2 months and 18 days he was also the second youngest 9-ball World Cup winner after Wu Jiaqing (2005).

2019: US Open victory

Filler started 2019 with another success. In New York he won the final tournament of the World Pool Series 2018 with a 17:11 final win against Ralf Souquet . A few days later, however, he did not get above 65th place in the 9-ball main tournament of the Derby City Classic . He achieved better results at the side events. He finished second in the 10-Ball Challenge and fifth in the Straight Pool Challenge. In February 2019, Filler made it into the final of a Euro Tour tournament for the fourth time. After three defeats in the final, he secured his first victory in the final against Russian Ruslan Tschinachow with 9: 7. At the World Pool Masters 2019 he suffered an opening defeat like last year, this time against Albin Ouschan (6: 7).

In April 2019, Filler moved into the finals of the US Open in Las Vegas after defeating defending champion Jayson Shaw , among others . There he met the Chinese Wu Jiaqing , against whom he prevailed with 13:10 and thus won the US Open as the second German after Ralf Souquet (2002).

At the 10-Ball World Championship in Las Vegas in 2019 , Filler reached a World Cup final for the second time. After defeating defending champion Ko Pin-yi 10: 8 in the semifinals , he had to admit defeat to his younger brother Ko Ping-chung 7:10 in the final. He was the first German to win a medal at the 10-Ball World Cup.

Team career

With the PBC Schwerte 87 , Filler was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2013 and to the 1st Bundesliga in 2014 , taking first place in the individual ranking. In the 2014/15 season he was German champion with the swords and again achieved first place in the individual ranking. In the following season he reached third place with the club. He then moved to Bundesliga promoted 1. PBC Sankt Augustin . In the 2016/17 season , Filler won three of his four individual games on the first league weekend. After he had to cancel his participation in the second league weekend for school reasons, the club announced in December 2016 that the contract had been terminated “in the interests of both parties” after Filler terminated the contract because he did not feel comfortable with the club. Filler then returned to PBC Schwerte, but due to the club change he was only eligible to play in the league again in the 2017/18 season . After finishing fourth with Schwerte, he moved back to Sankt Augustin in the summer of 2018, where he became German champion in the first season.

With the German national team, he became European champion in 2016 . Two years later he retired with the team in the preliminary round.

In 2017 , at the age of 20, he was the youngest member of the European team at the Mosconi Cup to date, replacing the record held by Ronnie O'Sullivan , who took part in 1996 at the age of 21. In Europe's 11: 4 victory over the USA, Filler won his five games (the team encounter as well as two doubles and two singles) - including the decisive match in which he defeated Dennis Hatch 5-3 - and was the first German to receive the award as Most Valuable Player . A year later he was not nominated.

Filler took part in the World Cup of Pool for the first time in 2018 . Together with Ralf Souquet, he formed the German team that was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Chinese Kong Dejing and Wang Ming .
