Until 2009, the World Pool Masters was purely an invitation-only tournament, in which 16 pool players (and occasionally also female pool players) were nominated by the organizer. These then played against each other in the knockout system .
For 2010 the field of participants was expanded to 64. The places have now been allocated partly through invitations and partly through qualifying tournaments. First, the field in the double knockout system was reduced to 32. This means: After the first game, the players were divided into a winning round and a losing round. Whoever was in the winning round only had to prevail in one game against another player who had won in the first round to get to the final round. In the losers round, however, you first had to assert yourself against another player who lost in the first game and then win against a loser from the winning round. Even if this system is relatively complicated, it guarantees every player to be able to lose a game in the preliminary round without having to be eliminated from the tournament immediately. The second lost game within the preliminary round will in any case lead to elimination from the tournament. The field of 32 then played again in the "regular" knockout system until the final.
The original mode has been used again since 2011, with individual participants being determined through qualifying matches.
