Merisant is an American chemical company based in Chicago . Merisant produces sweeteners under the brand names Equal , Canderel and Pure Via .

The company goes back to the discovery of aspartame at GD Searle in 1965. In 1985, Searle was taken over by Monsanto .

When Pharmacia & Upjohn merged with Monsanto in 2000, the NutraSweet Company was split up. The household sweetener business was taken over by a group of investors consisting of Pegasus Capital Advisors , Michael Dells MSD Capital and Brener International and renamed Merisant . At the time, the company had sales of $ 400 million and occupied a third of the world market.

In 2009 the company filed for bankruptcy , which it was able to exit in 2010 after restructuring.

In 2014, Merisant was acquired by MacAndrews & Forbes .
