The Merkel building at Helmholtzstrasse 14-16 in Dresden belongs to the TU Dresden and is an example of socialist classicism .

The building was erected in 1955/57 with a usable area of ​​43,000 square meters according to designs by the architects Fritz Schaarschmidt and Gerhard Sperling in a " traditional construction " with "sandstone plaster facades". It is a three-storey teaching building with an experimental hall. The reliefs by Max Lachnit above the main entrance are remarkable . The building was named after Leopold Carl Friedrich Merkel , Professor of Theoretical Mechanical Engineering and today houses the Institute for Thermodynamics and Technical Building Services.
