Feature (GIS)

As a feature (Engl. Feature ) in a geographic information system is the smallest, technically meaningful unit within a spatial data set (GIS). In this context, characteristic can be translated most easily as subject . Specialist objects in geographic information systems usually have a spatial reference that is indicated by coordinates . These can e.g. B. generated by digitizing points.

The structure of features in geographic information systems is now internationally standardized (see e.g. Open Geospatial Consortium ) and is specified by the General Feature Model .
