The company was founded in 1981 in Vermont by Clark Matis, Randy Merrell and John Schweitzer and initially produced high-quality hiking shoes. In 1985, the company's founder Randy Merrell presented the first hiking boot with a Gore-Tex membrane intermediate skin. In the early 1990s, the company produced its first “multifunctional shoe”. In 1992 the brand was represented in 22 countries in America, Europe and Asia.

Since 1997 Merrell is a brand of the shoe giant Wolverine World Wide (Hush Puppies and others). The group had 2010 sales of $ 500 million. In addition to the core area of ​​"footwear", the company entered the textile sector in 2007. Merrell sold its products in over 170 countries in 2012.

In Germany the brand is mainly sold through its online shop and at Decathlon, in Switzerland the brand is sold through specialist sports retailers.
