Mesology

Mesology ( meso ancient Greek μέσος , in the middle ', middle', milieu 'and -logie ancient Greek λόγος lógos ' teaching'; "milieu teaching" or "environmental science") is a term used earlier for the subject ecology .

Historical

The term mesology was first introduced in 1860 by Louis-Adolphe Bertillon and was intended to describe the theory of the environmental relationship between organisms, derived from the French "science des milieux" (environmental science). He later expanded the term to include sociology and milieu influence.

Nowadays the term is mainly used in the French and Portuguese language areas. The term ecology (coined in 1866 by Ernst Haeckel ) has established itself in German-speaking countries .
