Mesoscaph
The term Mesoskaph or Mesoscaph describes a class of submarines , which, in contrast to bathyscaphe move in the middle or shallow depth range.
The origin of the term is not definitely certain. It is believed that it of Auguste Piccard or his son Jacques Piccard for classification of deep Bathyskaphen FNRS-2 and Trieste over the relatively shallow diving boats Benjamin Franklin (PX-15) or Auguste Piccard (PX-8) created or first was used publicly.
Well-known boats of this class are:
- Ben Franklin (PX-15) , a research submarine for drifting observation in the Gulf Stream
- Auguste Piccard (PX-8) , a flat tourist submarine
