Messagebase

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Messagebase is the name commonly used in FidoNet and comparable mailbox networks for the database, which contains all messages that can be read directly on a system.

It is managed by a Tosser , who is responsible for sorting newly received messages, exporting messages written locally on the system for sending and maintaining them, i.e. deleting messages that are too old or defective and performing a kind of defragmentation .

To read and write messages, men uses a special editor that is able to edit the respective messagebase format and works in a similar way to a combined e-mail / newsreader program.

Known Messagebase formats:

  • Hudson
  • Squish
  • JAM
  • * .MSG (directory with individual message files and index files)
