Tosser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Tosser is a common program in FidoNet for managing a message base .

The Tosser receives files from the mailer that contain messages in a certain format. If necessary, these are unpacked and then sorted into the individual areas of the messagebase ( toss , toss ). In addition, incoming messages are packed and made available for all links that have subscribed to the respective message area (are activated ).

If a message is written locally on the system, the Tosser must find it, export it, pack it if necessary and hand it over to the mailer for dispatch in a suitable manner. In the majority of cases, the Tosser also takes care of the maintenance of the message base, i.e. deleting old mail, defragmentation, and often also the automated creation and deletion of message areas.

Depending on the mailer, the Tosser only takes care of public messages (FrontDoor) or the processing of NetMail (Binkley style), which are often saved in different message base formats.

The choice of the tosser depends heavily on the choice of the messagebase format, the choice of editor and mailer. Quite a few Tosser support different mailer outbound formats and different messagebase formats.

There are also so-called fillet ossers.

In addition to the public message areas (echoes), there are also so-called file echoes in fido-compatible networks. Files are spread in file echoes. The file pushers have a similar task to the mail pushers for the mail, but occasionally also act as a request processor.
