Metaplasticity

Under metaplasticity means the phenomenon that cells , depending on their "past", with stimulation at the same frequency either LTP (Long-Time potention; long-term potentiation ) and LTD (long-term depression, long-term depression: see Synaptic Plasticity ) can train. This means that the previous state of activity has an effect on the type and development of long-term plasticity. It thus contradicts the fact that the same stimuli always have the same effects. However, this only applies to very specific frequencies. The standard LTP induction protocol (high-frequency-stimulation) leads wt ( w ild t so always ype-mouse) to LTP. Metaplasticity increases the complexity (and thus the storage capacity) of the brain .
