history

Metro cinema in Kiel

The cinema opened in 1939 under the name Schlosshof-Lichtspiele and was destroyed in an air raid in 1944 during World War II. After the reconstruction in 1946, films have been shown again since 1951. It was possible to have various world premieres there, which made the cinema known throughout Germany. Universum Film AG (Ufa) leased the building at the beginning of the 1980s . The 700-seat cinema was converted into four smaller halls. The competition from a multiplex cinema led to the closure of the house in the summer of 1996. After the insolvency of Ufa Theater AG in 2004, a new tenant was found who reopened the cinema on September 13, 2006. Instead of the original four, the cinema is now only operated with three halls. In addition to the cinematic program, the Metro-Kino is also used as a venue for other cultural events (e.g. readings by authors).
