The ICC model

One of his special achievements is the development of a five-stage model for intercultural competence of language learners. The "Model of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC)" (1997) is currently widely used in subject didactics.

It defines five so-called "savoirs":

  • Savoirs (knowledge)
  • Savoir être (attitudes of an intercultural speaker)
  • Savoir comprendre (ability to understand another culture )
  • Savoir apprendre (ability to acquire new knowledge)
  • Savoir s'engager (ability to critically reflect on foreign cultures)
