Mikhail Matveevich Sokolovsky
Mikhail Matwejewitsch Sokolovsky ( Russian Михаил Матвеевич Соколовский , Mikhail Sokolovsky ; * 1756 ; † around 1796) was a Russian composer.
Little is known about the life of Sokolowski. He is the composer of the opera Müller, Magician, Deceiver and Maid ( Мельник - колдун, обманщик и сват ; Melʹnik-koldun, obmanščik i svat) based on a libretto by Alexander Onissimowitsch Ablessimow , which is considered to be the first Russian comic opera. For the work, which premiered in Moscow in January 1779 and in Saint Petersburg in February, Sokolowski used popular Russian tunes. Opera remained on the repertoire of Russian opera houses until well into the 19th century.
