Mikveh (Venlo)
The so-called mikveh or the Judenbad in Venlo , a Dutch city in the province of Limburg , was probably built in the 13th century and excavated in 2004. The interpretation of the excavation findings as a mikveh is controversial.
history
During an excavation in the city center, a medieval cellar was excavated in 2004. During the excavation, the thesis came up that the finding, which is dated to the 13th century, was a Jewish ritual bath. This would be the oldest mikveh in the Benelux region.
The findings remained intact in the excavation pit and were recovered as a whole in 2008 and transferred to a newly built extension of the Limburg Museum .
At the beginning of December 2013, a report was presented by an independent expert who described the information provided by urban archeology as "unscientific, fraudulent and misleading". It is therefore not certain that it is a mikveh.
